Sustainability

Our vision is to bring together the best and brightest to deliver technology and solutions that help our customers accomplish their most critical missions and objectives. In doing so we strive to create a better, safer and more sustainable world. Given the purposeful, values-led culture of our business, it is unsurprising that the people of KBR also demonstrate a deep commitment to creating a more sustainable future for the planet and our communities. Our sustainability policy is built on the foundation of our industry-leading Zero Harm safety culture, at the crux of which is the genuine belief that the goal of zero workplace incidents is attainable.

The positive responses regarding Health & Safety were highlighted in the Welcome letter from Stuart. These are a testament to the rigor applied in all local offices to safe working practices, where the focus on Total Safety Task Instructions, Courage to Care Conversations, and The KBR Absolutes is most impressive. This helps us ensure employees go home safely every day and you can be assured that KBR’s wholehearted commitment will continue. As one employee pithily put it “I think their emphasis on safety is cool!”.

Our growing community of Wellbeing Ambassadors and the leadership of the Mental Health & Wellbeing Committee are instrumental in supporting employees’ mental health and fitness. It is important to us all that we support each other in times of need, and we are encouraged to hear of the positive impact this has. As one colleague explained “I have struggled with mental health and family bereavements for the last year management was very supportive in offering me flexible working arrangements and trusting that I will deliver on time and quality as per KBR standards”. Survey participants were asked whether KBR is a psychologically and emotionally healthy place to work, and 73% of respondents believed that is the case, with a further 19% saying this was sometimes true/sometimes untrue. We would like to see improvements in this area; as the results varied depending on business area, we will ensure that local action plans are developed to address these gaps.

Environment

With a clear societal shift raising expectations that companies take actions to tackle climate change, our efforts as an organization, and on behalf of our customers, resonate strongly with employees. Having achieved carbon neutrality in 2019 and established a 2030 net-zero carbon ambition, you can be confident that our efforts to support the environment continue to accelerate. 82% of survey participants believe in KBR’s commitment, a big step up on the 71% response in 2021, but we need to show that our public statements are more than lip-service. This is particularly true for younger employees, with positive responses markedly lower among this group, so we will engage directly with IMPACT’s global steering committee to discuss what we can do to improve in this area.

Community Engagement

In the 2021 survey, one of our lower scoring areas centred on our engagement with the community, with just 57% of employees feeling we meet our commitment to local communities. In 2022 the I&D focused Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) continued to work closely together with All In, our global community dedicated to promoting and strengthening our I&D culture. These groups are a tremendous asset to our people and our company, and we encourage all employees and managers to play an active role supporting their respective missions. Also in 2022, we were delighted to see a much higher positive response, with 74% feeling good about the ways we contribute to the community. This improvement is because of the huge efforts our employees made when Covid risks started to subside and opportunities to re-engage with wider communities emerged, often spearheaded by our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). Thank you for your ongoing passion and hard work to support our communities.
