8 Questions With the ELT
Greg Conlon
KBR Chief Digital & Development Officer
Would you tell us about your career journey?
I have spent more than 35 years working around the world in engineering and project delivery. I have been lucky enough to live in seven countries over that time, delivering projects in Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa and America. And it’s been a lot of fun!
I started my career as a mechanical engineer with a strong design, technology development and project management focus. That led to me being promoted to a chief mechanical engineering role at 30. Solving technical problems and learning to juggle resource management enabled me to transition into operational leadership roles before I turned 40, managing the P&Ls for complex, large‑scale, multidiscipline businesses in Singapore, London and Canada.
Before joining KBR, I held a senior CEO committee leadership role at WorleyParsons, including leading global business development after managing the $3B turnover Worley Canada services business. I was also a sponsor on a range of global mega-scale projects, some of which involved long-term joint ventures with preeminent peer organizations like Fluor, Foster Wheeler and KBR.
I joined KBR in 2016 as president for the Asia‑Pacific region, with responsibility for engineering and construction and government services. I later moved into the role of executive vice president and chief development officer, leading strategy, global business development, marketing, consulting, and mergers and acquisitions. Since 2019, I’ve been KBR’s chief digital and development officer, where I’m responsible for the company’s digital strategy and transformation, including how we use technology and AI to improve the way we work and deliver outcomes for our customers. To ensure our strategy is converted into measurable outcome, I also have oversight of project controls, procurement and the IT function globally.
What do you do in your free time?
My free time is normally family time. I have a wonderful family who I love to spend my time with and a passion for hiking, skiing, running and cycling that fills up my summers and winters.
What’s your favorite book or movie?
Right now, I am binge-watching “For All Mankind.” What a compelling parallel universe version of the Space Race.
Do you have a favorite song or music genre?
My favourite music genre is whatever my wife sings! Michelle, my partner, is a singer–songwriter, and I am normally the "roadie” for her gigs. 😊
What would be the title of your autobiography?
“What’s the Worst that Could Happen?” Because you can only regret what you don’t do.
How are you using AI?
I use AI daily, primarily to speed up the efficiency and quality of my work. I use Copilot for things like drafting emails, polishing internal communications, and pulling together structured analysis. For example, I ask AI to generate a first pass of written communications that I can edit. So rather than starting from scratch, I’m skipping 20 to 30 minutes of prep time and moving straight into the check and edit phase.
Beyond Copilot, I also use Claude for more challenging issues, as it’s a fundamentally stronger large language model.
What’s something that inspires or motivates you?
At work, I am always amazed by the amazing people at KBR. It motivates me to work on technology that delivers real‑world impact, to move beyond hype and deliver things that matter! I can’t wait to see how AI can enable KBR to do even greater things!
What’s one piece of AI advice you frequently give?
The advice I give most frequently at the moment around AI is “USE IT!”
When I have people who have concerns or don’t know where to start, my biggest piece of advice is to just experiment, have fun, and don't take it too seriously. AI is here to help us work smarter, not replace what makes us human. If we embrace AI together thoughtfully and responsibly, it will strengthen both our people and our business.
