KBR’s Mental Wellness Resources Take Awareness and Resilience to New Heights

It is crucial to regularly check in with us and one other,” said Ashley. “KBR has a multitude of resources to provide connection, guidance and support. Never underestimate the power of a simple, ’How are you doing?’ check-in!"

At KBR, employee well-being is a key focus area. Our leaders are committed to prioritizing mental wellness for each person within the organization. To this effect, various mental health initiatives have been implemented across KBR.

For instance, each KBR employee has access to the free meQ app, which provides guidance and strategies on managing stress and building personal resilience. Chapters of OK NoW (ONE KBR Network of Well-being), our employee mental wellness group, have been launched across KBR locations worldwide. And KBR has also launched the Mental Health First Aiders program (formally Well-being Ambassadors), through which KBR employees are trained to recognize signs of mental duress, to intervene, and to point colleagues toward available resources.

Resources like these would be valuable for anyone. For people who are solving the world’s toughest challenges and potentially dealing with the stress and pressure that can accompany their important jobs, these resources are crucial.

According to Ashley Owens, senior specialist of Global Mental Health and Fitness, HSSE, “Stress and anxiety are the body's natural reaction to a perceived threat. While useful in dangerous situations, chronic stress and anxiety can lead to burnout. When people find themselves in this state, they can experience debilitated decision-making, decreased emotion control, a lack of confidence and a focus shift.”

As a result, people begin to focus too much on surviving, not thriving, and we can experience emotional, physical or social repercussions. These can include feeling physically ill, experiencing strong emotional outbursts, such as anger or sadness, or wanting to withdraw from those around us.

Here's a closer look at the mental health and fitness resources available within KBR:

Employee Support Program (ESP)

KBR’s ESP is available for any KBR employee or their dependent who needs to speak to a professional specializing in several different areas, including mental health. KBR’s ESP is facilitated by Workplace Options, a confidential, third-party assistance resource. Workplace Options provides access to certified mental health specialists, who offer immediate support on a wide range of topics.

meQuilibrium (meQ)

This free third-party application provides self-driven mental wellness education and skill building in areas such as emotional intelligence, change management, resilience and more. KBR employees or their dependents can easily download the app on a mobile phone or computer.

Mental Health First Aiders

Under this company-sponsored employee volunteer program, First Aiders at each KBR office location are certified to listen to and support colleagues experiencing mental stress and to point them toward available resources. Coworkers experiencing mental distress are also encouraged to seek out a First Aider in their local office, who can help them navigate the situation.

OK NoW

This is an employee resource group dedicated to raising awareness about overall well-being. A group of like-minded individuals comes together and provides a proactive platform for employees to promote well-being and engage with one another over educational yet fun activities.

At KBR, we ensure help is always on hand when required.
