The General Counsel team works with business partners to ensure they can grow their business while also safeguarding the organization by doing the following:

New Business and Growth

Supports new business awards, projects, acquisitions, divestitures, investments, and alliances that promote KBR’s strategy and accelerate growth.

Compliance and Regulation

Ensuring that the organization complies with applicable laws and reducing the risk to our reputation and of legal penalties, fines and other consequences.

Risk Management

Identifying potential legal risks and developing strategies to mitigate those risks to avoid liabilities and potential disputes in the future.

Intellectual Property (IP) Protection

KBR IP: Protect KBR’s IP and trade secrets through patents, trademarks and copyrights, ensuring the organization's innovations and brands are safeguarded.

Third-party IP

Respect IP of others (whether IP is owned by a partner, vendor, client, competitor, etc.) by adhering to nondisclosure agreements.

Dispute Resolution

Managing and resolving disputes (employees, customers or other entities) through negotiation, mediation or litigation, thus minimizing disruption to the organization.

Employment Law

Ensuring KBR complies with employment laws, including those related to hiring, firing, workplace safety and discrimination. This helps maintain a fair and lawful workplace environment.

Contract/Commercial Management

Drafting, negotiating, reviewing and managing contracts to ensure they are legally binding and favorable to the organization, preventing future disputes and liabilities.

Corporate Governance

Ensuring that the organization follows best practices and complies with laws related to corporate structure, board responsibilities and shareholder rights.

Crisis Management

Providing critical support to protect the organization's reputation and navigate legal implications in times of crisis, such as data breaches.

Training and Education

Provide training and education to employees, helping them understand their responsibilities and the legal implications of their actions.

Information Assurance

Establishing and maintaining the enterprise vision, strategy and program to ensure the KBR brand, information assets and technologies are adequately protected.

Protecting KBR’s Brand With the Power of IP

The IP team works to protect IP via application for patent protection, registration for trademarks, and trade secret protective measures. These protections help KBR capture and retain elevated margins for our technology. The team also assists with decisions regarding development of technology, as well as during due diligence for acquiring IP/partnering with an IP provider to avoid potential IP risks.

Through KBR’s Information Assurance Program, we build and maintain our clients’ trust while assuring KBR’s values, brand and reputation are upheld by investigating business integrity complaints.

How Digital Tools Are Shaping the Future of General Counsel

The key to success for KBR's Legal department are scalability and sustainability, which enable it to support the company's growth and evolution. The team is focused on enhancing operational efficiency by modernizing processes, improving reporting and fostering collaboration.

In recent years, the team has introduced e-billing software to streamline billing with law firms, automated various workflows using digital tools, and are currently developing a legal chatbot, Beagle, through KBRaiN℠, KBR’s proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) tool. Future plans include exploring contract life cycle management, a legal intake request system, and AI tools to assist with document drafting and summarization, paving the way for even greater efficiency.

These innovations are positioning the Legal team to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring KBR remains agile and well supported in the ever-changing business landscape.
