Sustainability:

Our Progress on the Path to Net-Zero Emissions

As a global leader in science, technology and engineering, KBR is dedicated to delivering world-class solutions to help our customers accomplish their most critical objectives. Equally, we’re committed to helping our customers achieve those objectives sustainably. This mission is underpinned by our own robust sustainability practices, designed to align our business growth with the preservation and protection of our planet and the advancement of society. Helping guide that mission is KBR’s Sustainability team, tasked with integrating environmental and social impact and ethical governance into the corporate strategy.

Many of you will already be familiar with our Sustainability Pillars — ten areas across our company where we focus our sustainability efforts. These pillars provide the foundation of our sustainability policy and closely correspond with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Climate change is a key focus for the company, and to help us meet challenges and opportunities it presents the business, KBR has formed a global team of internal experts and external consultants to work on developing a robust Climate Action Plan. For our net-zero commitment to be globally recognized and verified, KBR has committed to setting science-based emissions reduction targets and is developing the roadmap based on the criteria and recommendations of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which provides companies with independent assessment and validation of targets in line with the latest climate science.

Several key milestones have been reached so far on our journey toward net zero, including:

Establishing a global emissions baseline, involving the analysis of emissions data from 2019 and 2020, covering 131 sites and 28,000 employees across the globe.

Rolling out an emissions monitoring platform (UL360) to help track scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from our operationally controlled facilities.

“Setting the stage” with internal processes and systems that will allow for effective development, assessment and implementation of net-zero initiatives.

Establishing a Net Zero Project Team and a Climate Security Team

In addition to the important work being done to address climate change within KBR, the Sustainability team has implemented several local and global initiatives that align with our ten Sustainability Pillars.

Regional and local sustainability committees and working groups have been formed to assist with location-specific projects.

Since October, KBR’s Leatherhead campus in the UK has procured 100% renewable electricity and heating gas for its office buildings.

The KBR One Ocean program was scaled back over COVID-19, but some of the participating schools across the EMEA and APAC regions continued to thrive. We are now focusing on getting One Ocean back up and running in other regions.

KBR’s Global Mental Health and Well-being Committee has continued growing the Well-being Ambassador program and now have 192 Well-being Ambassadors covering 28 sites.

KBR has also been raising awareness on sustainability initiatives and educating our people on the importance of the ten pillars through recognition days such as Zero Harm Day, World Mental Health Day and World Environment Day. Teams across the globe joined together both in person and virtually to celebrate through activities such as a carbon capture exhibition, wildlife show-and-tell, One Ocean information stands, bird and bee box decorating, and sustainable cooking demos.

Sustainability is fundamental to all of KBR’s activities. It guides our business approach, informs our global activities, and helps us better support our people, our communities and our planet for future generations.
