KBR Sustainability: From the Office to Outer Space
KBR Sustainability: From the Office to Outer Space
Our commitment to sustainability means doing what's right for our planet, people, communities and business and has continued to drive our performance throughout 2020. Our sustainability efforts fall under our Zero Harm ethos and focus on 10 key pillars.
All over the world in many different areas of our business, we’re making great strides in accomplishing our sustainability goals.
In the United States, we are supporting our climate change objectives through our work with Landsat and EROS, which includes:
- Developing the system used by the Global Seismographic Network to verify meteorological watches and warnings, and to disseminate the data to warn communities.
- Supporting the study of land change through the acquisition, archiving, processing and distribution of remotely sensed Earth data for the U.S. Geological Survey that is also used in geospatial applications for the first responder, wildfire, intelligence, agriculture, academia and research communities.
- Providing tools for global climate analysis and state-of-the-art geophysical model development.
- Leading data visualization techniques for precipitation, atmospheric chemistry, air quality, land imagery and more.
In Melbourne, Australia, we are helping to deliver sustainability requirements on a $1.5 billion (AUD) rail project as part of the North Western Program Alliance (NWPA). This involves achieving accreditation from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA), which is awarded for:
- Minimizing carbon emissions through responsible material use and energy consumption.
- Adapting infrastructure to mitigate potential effects of climate change risks, including extreme weather events.
- Delivering liveable communities with infrastructure that promotes human well-being.
KBR has proudly supported the NWPA in delivering multiple stations, railways and public use areas over the past three years that have received an "Excellent" accreditation.
In Seoul, South Korea, the Korea Olefins Technology Center (KOTC) team has been driving even greater focus on Health, Safety & Security throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes implementing principle safety tools and systems of work to support employees, such as:
- Communicating with a simple notification service called KakaoTalk for daily sharing of individuals’ health and body temperature.
- Enhancing safety and minimizing risk in the office by checking temperatures at the front door and by cleaning hands before entering the office.
- Always wearing a face covering when not in the designated work area.
- Minimizing face-to-face meetings and using MS Teams when possible.
The KOTC team has embraced the attitude that community participation is key to overcoming many COVID-19 challenges, with the hearts and minds of our employees being focused on Zero Harm. For example, there is a strong focus on identifying and reporting hazards through the Zero Harm app. And Louis Yang, a KOTC employee, has the highest Zero Harm Courage to Care Conversation submissions in KBR.
Around the globe, KBR has gone above and beyond (literally) with our sustainability efforts and our work to achieve environmental targets. We’ve reimagined the way we manage our waste by implementing proven recycling and waste reduction programs.
