Reimagining How We Deliver

KBR in a COVID-19 World and Beyond

Early in 2020, the world heard the first serious reports of a new global threat — the spread of COVID-19. No one could have foreseen how the COVID-19 pandemic would change the fabric of the world in which we live and work. It’s clear this event will likely have lasting global effects, including a vastly altered economic landscape. Thanks to a strong foundation, swift action, deft mobilization and a laser focus on serving our customers, KBR has been able to meet the challenge.

Resiliency and Opportunity

At the onset of the pandemic, KBR’s Zero Harm focus immediately shifted to managing a global crisis. In January, we activated our global crisis management team, began planning for various scenarios, tested our business resilience plans and IT infrastructure, and started transitioning employees to remote work arrangements. Within a matter of weeks, more than 90% of KBR employees were working successfully from home and collaborating with colleagues and clients using new digital tools. Despite the challenging circumstances, KBR has been able to ensure continuity of service for a majority of its portfolio and has continued to deliver on its mission.

The pandemic has certainly been a major test. However, it has also been an unforeseen catalyst for transformation. “In the early days of the pandemic, Stuart asked the executive leadership team, ‘How can we find the upside and use these uncertain times to build a better outcome for our customers and our employees?’” said Byron Bright, President, Government Solutions. “Seeing how well we responded to remote arrangements prompted us to think about new ways of working that would equip our people to be more flexible, cut costs, further increase productivity and collaboration, and help us achieve our sustainability goals, all while ensuring we were delivering for our customers.” By capitalizing on our current momentum, we have the opportunity to reimagine how we deliver at KBR.

KBR Culture, Work Practices and Workplaces — Reimagined

Employee success in maintaining a high level of productivity and efficiency during the pandemic has fast-tracked efforts toward becoming a more modern, globally diverse and sustainable workforce, particularly through the adoption of new flexible work arrangements, which will allow some employees to continue working remotely full time or to split time between the office and home. A team of KBR leaders from around the globe, led by Bright, has been guiding broader organizational efforts and examining ways to improve aspects of how KBR delivers. The team has focused on three key areas where KBR will need to evolve to ensure continued success in our new normal — reimagining our culture, our work practices and our workplaces.

Social and Environmental Benefits

Reimagining how we do business will also yield several other social and environmental benefits. Increased virtual client interaction and remote work will reduce both the need for local commuting and global air travel, which will help KBR meet sustainability goals by adopting more sustainable travel practices and reducing our overall carbon emissions. Also traveling for work less helps keep KBR employees safer, which supports our HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment) goals.

Reimagining Our Future

The challenges of COVID-19 have been difficult, but the opportunities to do things differently, to do things better and more sustainably are immense. To help guide employees during this time of transition, KBR has developed a resource hub with information, learning tools and IT resources.

“We are a global, diverse company, so we know there won’t be a one-size-fits-all approach as we reimagine how we deliver,” Bright said. “While we continue to develop resources to support our people, we also want to hear from them — we want to empower employees to think outside the box and to let their ideas be heard for how we can equip local teams to succeed.”

At KBR, we are reimagining our culture, work processes and workplaces, and are excited for our journey toward a more flexible, connected and collaborative future.
