Hear from our local team of teams

Meet John Perrott, Civil Discipline Manager
John Perrott is a Civil Discipline Manager, who has been with KBR in Perth for eight years.
“The thing I love most about my work is finding the right balance between sustainability and user outcomes. There’s so much complexity in balancing budget constraints, client constraints, and delivering the right outcomes while also being really conscious not to disrupt the environment.
“As Perth’s population grows, we need significant infrastructure upgrades in order to service the community through road and rail upgrades. But we can’t make these upgrades at the expense of historically significant trees or sacred Indigenous land – the work we do impacts the environment and the community, so there’s a lot involved when it comes to holistic design decisions that consider the various – and often competing – needs of numerous stakeholders. The challenge of working through these issues to find design solutions that take all these factors into consideration is what I love about the role.
“But the other thing I love is the people - our culture is the key to what makes working at KBR so great. We work hard to foster a positive, welcoming culture, and we make a conscious decision to bring people into the business who align with these values. This results in having a tight knit team who all get along and enjoy the work they do.
“We believe that if you cultivate the right culture, we can deal with any challenges and curve balls that come our way. Knowing all the work doesn’t rest on your shoulders – that you have the support of your team - makes the work environment so much better. Having that team support really does make it easier.“There’s also a lot of diversity in the work, which keeps things interesting. Infrastructure has been going through a peak and we’ve had loads of work there, but now energy and defence spending is ramping up and we expect to have more work in these industries in future. That’s the great thing about civil - we can work with a lot of the other disciplines. Plus, we work closely with different teams around the country on projects across every state. Working collaboratively with the national teams and knowing we have a vast array of resources to work with means that nothing is off the table. The opportunities at KBR are limitless.”

Meet Matthew Garrett, Project Coordinator
Matthew Garret is a project coordinator who has been with KBR for just over a year, based in the Perth office.
“I work in the Perth office in the Energy and Resource - Project Management Division. I'm currently part of an integrated project delivery team for one of our key clients in the rare earths sector.
“I really enjoy the engagement and challenges of direct project delivery. Additionally, I'm particularly passionate about using systems and technology to streamline business and project processes, changing how we work to create clear and common understanding among the teams.
“But what I really love about KBR is the feeling of connection and camaraderie amongst the team. There’s a group of around 40 of us in the Perth office who’ve signed up to do S30 classes - a fusion of weight training and cardio in a fully-immersive environment.
“The classes are on daily, and on any given day there's between 2-10 of us at a class. It’s a great way to connect with colleagues outside of the traditional work setting, and get fit in the process. And with the KBR pass and our office end of trip faculties, it’s easy to integrate the classes into your workday.
“I'm continually impressed by the people at KBR, both personally and professionally. I know it sounds like a cliché, but KBR really does have some of the friendliest people, who are professionally curious and are always ready to both help and learn. The people – combined with some incredibly interesting work on projects in growth areas like rare earths – makes KBR a fantastic place to work with loads of opportunity for growth.”

Meet Gail Geurzon, Graduate Civil Engineer
Gail Geurzon is a Graduate Civil Engineer working from the Perth office. Gail joined KBR in 2022 and is currently in her second year of KBR’s national Graduate Program.
“Working at KBR has given me opportunities to solve complex challenges that require innovative thinking and technical expertise – far above what I would have expected this early in my career. Analysing and considering different approaches when problem solving can be daunting - but my team has supported and encouraged me. And it’s exciting when you get to see one of the designs you’ve worked on come to life and implemented successfully.
“On my first rail project, I was able to see the project through from its initial stages to a more advanced phase, which was so invaluable in understanding a project’s lifecycle – from planning and design to construction and maintenance considerations. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds, learning about the importance of collaboration, engagement, and communication with stakeholders, which is such an important part of meeting project requirements. And joining KBR’s grad mentoring program has given me the support I need to approach challenging situations with more confidence, and reflect on my strengths and areas for improvement to ensure my continued career growth.
“I especially enjoy the social aspect of KBR. Being part of the IMPACT Group - one of KBR’s employee resource groups - has provided me a sense of community and belonging, helping me build relationships with colleagues from other disciplines who share similar values and interests. These social activities have helped create an inclusive workplace culture which has made me feel welcome, valued and respected.
“KBR values having a healthy work-life balance by providing flexible work arrangements that enable us to effectively manage our professional and personal lives. Overall, the balance between learning and development opportunities, social activities and work life balance makes KBR is a fantastic place to work, which has laid a solid foundation for my career as a civil engineer.”

Meet James Rose, Sustainability Manager
James Rose is the Sustainability Manager for the Woodside Pluto Train 1 Scarborough Modification Project, and has been with KBR for a year.
“My role as sustainability manager for the Woodside Pluto Train 1 Scarborough Modification Project encompasses sustainability and the environment, social performance, community engagement and regulatory approvals.
“I am also the Co-chair for the Abled and Disabled Allies Partnering Together (ADAPT) employee reference group (ERG), which is aimed at educating, empowering, and advocating for individuals, or those that have family members, with conditions that qualify as disabilities at all levels of the organisation.
“I love the diversity of my role. I am responsible for several unique areas for the project, such as working with people and the community, while also adhering to project approvals and deliverables. Much of the work I do improves business reputation and community trust. It’s rewarding to be able to work with people to establish relationships and promote community enrichment.
“No day is the same in this role and each day brings a new challenge. But thankfully, I have a global network of colleagues and I can tap into the knowledge and resources of highly experienced KBR people around the world.
“With 4 young daughters, my life is very hectic, but working flexibly allows me to support both my family in the mornings and afternoons when I’m needed at home, while also working with colleagues in various time zones around the world.
“The ability to work remotely is core to the success of my role, as well as my ability to support my family. I’m trusted and empowered to work when it suits me, allowing me to find a great balance between work and home life. I aim to come into the office 2-3 days a week, but the team is understanding that sometimes life changes and my work arrangements will need to adapt as necessary. Finally, having such a flexible work arrangement has allowed my wife to return to work (medical doctor at a hospital) as I am able to be primary parent on call if needed – a unique experience for fathers!
“I find that KBR has a genuine people focus. I feel incredibly fortunate and supported by everyone at KBR, from my colleagues in the project team to the senior managers and executives responsible for the business. People are friendly, kind-hearted and take a real interest in who you are and what is important to you. From an inclusion and diversity perspective, there is no pressure to be someone you are not, and instead you are encouraged to by yourself, and the business has a desire to support you in that journey.”

Meet Hannah Crowther, Deputy Director, Transport, VIC, SA & WA + National Chair of ASPIRE
Hannah Crowther is the Deputy Director, Transport, VIC, SA & WA, and has been working with KBR for over three years.
“I joined KBR as the Deputy Market Sector Director for Victoria, then became market sector manager Victoria before moving to Perth. Now, I’m the Deputy Director for Transport, looking after the VIC, SA and WA markets.
“I love the work that I do and the people I work with. I’m thankful to be in a role where I’ve earned the trust of the business to have full autonomy in my role - as long as I’m delivering outcomes that are in line with our strategy, I’m given the space to do things in a way that works best for my team and our customers, which is such a refreshing approach.
“On a personal level, I’m really passionate about getting more women involved in the engineering industry. As the Chair of ASPIRE, KBR’s employee driven resource group committed to the development of women and the promotion of gender diversity at KBR, it is my role to balance the advocacy of women with our business objectives, while enabling a positive culture that challenges gender biases. We do this by ensuring women are considered for promotions, increasing the number of female employees through recruitment and retention initiatives, encouraging our female employees to nominate themselves for awards and submit abstracts for conferences, and celebrating the women in the business on significant days in the calendar.
“There are so many opportunities for women in this industry – even for those who don’t have a technical background. We’ve got one woman in the Victorian team who joined as a receptionist, moved into admin, then sales, and then became a system project manager. There are so many more opportunities in engineering-related roles than people realise, and it’s such a rewarding and enriching career.”

Meet Carman Yeung, Structural Engineer, Pride + Allies lead WA
Carman Yeung is a structural engineer who’s been with KBR WA for almost two years.
“I joined KBR when I moved to Australia in 2022. I’ve always wanted to join a consultancy and KBR is one of the biggest international consultancies in the world – I knew there would be a lot of opportunities for me.
“I work as a structural engineer – I’ve completed a PHD in structural health monitoring (SHM), which is the key component of asset assurance for bridge inspection. I’m also really interested in project management, and after having mentioned this to my manager I’ve been supported to also take on project management roles. So I’m currently working across both fields to grow my experience in the project management space, which I’m incredibly grateful for.
“However, the support and encouragement from KBR extends well beyond my career aspirations. KBR’s support of the LGBTQ+ community is not like anything I experienced in my home country of Hong Kong. My team is so supportive, I can comfortably come out and be myself without worrying about potential consequences.
“Since being invited to participate in a panel for Wear it Purple Day in 2023, we decided to launch a Pride + Allies chapter in WA, which I was nominated to lead. We have six members of the group, but the whole office participates in activities – we recently had an event for The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and we’re hoping to participate in the upcoming Perth Pride parade.
“One of the reasons I left Hong Kong is that it’s so conservative and I didn’t feel able to be myself – whereas KBR allows you to bring your whole self to work without fear of judgement. This welcoming and inclusive side to KBR means that I’m able to just focus on my career and doing the things I love. I haven’t even been with the company for two years and I’ve had so many experiences - I’ve done a secondment with government, I’ve participated in a customer golf tournament, watched cricket matches with customers, and have been offered such a wide variety of projects to stretch and grow my skills.“Everyone is welcome at KBR. And your career options are only limited by your imagination.”

Meet Anthony Dang, Civil Engineer
Anthony Dang is a civil engineer who has been with KBR for around 1.5 years.
“I’m currently working in the Defence team in Perth, which is an interesting industry and growing rapidly. We have no shortage of projects to keep us busy.
“One of the great things about working at KBR is the professional development opportunities - I’ve been able to push my career in the direction I want based on my goals. The company culture also plays a key part in making KBR a place to work. The people here make a lot of effort to create a positive and welcoming environment – from social events to formal learning opportunities that are a direct result from staff feedback.
“I’m involved in the IMPACT ERG here in WA. To me, IMPACT provides an opportunity to get to know and connect with your peers on a more personal level. It can’t be underestimated how important it is to have work friends – people you can have lunch with or have a banter with - and being part of IMPACT helps to create these social connections within the business.
“We hold a variety of events, from fun social gatherings to volunteering events like beach clean-ups and volunteering at Ronald McDonald House. Sometimes we just catch up informally outside of work because we’ve created a tight knit group who enjoys spending time with each other.“KBR is the first company I’ve worked at where the concepts of inclusivity and fostering a healthy working environment is more than just talk – there’s a genuine effort to make everyone feel welcome, while understanding that people have lives outside of work. The office is often bustling, the people are funny and if you have something to say - we’ll hear you out. Anyone considering a career at KBR should definitely give us a go.”
