Rail

Connecting people and places

Resilient and reliable public transport infrastructure is critical for any city or region that aims to improve social equity and reduce carbon emissions. As our populations grow, transport networks are becoming more congested, unsafe and unable to keep up with demand.

We support our customers to plan, design and deliver end-to-end technical solutions for some of the nation’s most complex urban and regional rail projects that minimise disruption and impacts to communities and the environment.

We are leaders in sustainability innovation, achieving many Australian firsts such as receiving a 6-star Green Star rating from Green Buildings Council of Australia and the highest rating ever awarded by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) for a recent passenger train station.

Technical solutions in any environment

Able to deliver solutions for a range of existing or new infrastructure, we’re acutely aware of the challenges associated with designing and implementing an upgrade or retrofit in complex brownfield environments. We use the latest digital tools and technology – including digital modelling and architectural rendering – to co-create the most effective design solutions with our customers, stakeholders, operators, and the community.

Our greenfield rail designs involve a substantial amount of environment, planning and sustainability input. We work to minimise negative impacts to the environment and community, while also reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint across the project lifecycle.

Rail infrastructure

KBR has a reputation for applying our technical and logistical know-how to plan, design and deliver track alignments for new and existing metro, regional, freight and light rail assets to the requirements of different regions and terrains, on time and within budget. We partner with our customers and communities to determine the best solutions for each project, reducing negative impacts while enhancing positive outcomes.

Elevated rail and grade separation

We’re experts in designing efficient and affordable elevated rail solutions that minimise disruptions to drivers and commuters during construction, while enhancing liveability for communities. We do this by applying a people centred approach to urban design, landscaping and planning. We unlock social, environmental, and economic potential for reclaimed land along rail corridors, connecting communities in new ways.

KBR was involved in bringing the innovative U-trough rail viaduct design solution to Australia for the first time. We have also been involved in the removal of several award-winning elevated level crossings across Australia, which have given highly valued green and active spaces back to communities.

Implementing a grade separation design of a level crossing is the ideal solution for removing congestion, decreasing travel time, and increasing the safety of commuters. KBR has been involved in the lowering of multiple level crossings, including road under rail and rail under road designs. These designs include the inputs of geotechnical experts monitoring the excavation requirements, including retaining walls and the consideration of bus, cyclist and pedestrian access. We are familiar with working within the tight landscapes of inner-city grade separations, and our sustainability team inputs into the design, creating public use spaces such as playgrounds, gardens and mixed-use parks.

Depots and maintenance facilities

Modern facilities that safely and efficiently maintain and stabilise rolling stock fleets – with the ability to adapt and expand as cities and regions grow – are essential to any rail network. Train depot infrastructure is complex and must be designed in a way that meets the bespoke requirements for servicing, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs. From stabling areas and workshops, to lifting facilities and wash plants, right through to control centre and administrative buildings, we have the industry expertise to deliver train depots – and their associated facilities – for any rail network and fleet.

Stations

Trains stations are gateways to cities and neighbourhoods; they enhance civic engagement, increase social and economic development, build cultural understanding, and connect people with places. We work collaboratively with our architectural partners to bring our customers’ vision to life, designing spaces that aim to achieve these social and cultural outcomes, while also considering practical factors such as safety, lighting, accessibility, seamless integration with interchanges, commuter parking, and building services. We tailor our award-winning solutions to meet individual station requirements. For example, regional stations typically require simple and functional design, whereas inner-city suburban stations will often need a more bespoke approach to better integrate with their surrounding communities and local spaces.
