Port of Brisbane Zero Waste
Supporting the Port of Brisbane to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030
The Port of Brisbane has set an ambitious target to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030, which means by 2030 all waste from the port’s operations will either be recycled, composted, reused, or avoided all together.
KBR has been engaged to generate a strategy and roadmap for the Port of Brisbane’s zero-waste target, in which KBR will identify the barriers to achieving zero waste before establishing a set of initiatives designed to address these barriers and reduce the waste load.
Project highlights:
- Achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030
- KBR will adopt the principles of the circular economy and aims to avoid waste with smart design and the effective recovery of materials that can be reused.
Urban Utilities Net Zero project
Supporting Urban Utilities to achieve net zero
Urban Utilities has engaged KBR to investigate opportunities for the organisation to help meet its goal of Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2032.
To support the roadmap to Net Zero and to address hard to abate emissions, Urban Utilities aims to invest in local projects rehabilitating land in southern Queensland. KBR is supporting Urban Utilities with this critical initiative and is investigating the business case for high quality, locally sourced vegetation-based offsets.
Project highlights:
- Offset projects such as reforestation and habitat rehabilitation will restore natural habitats and wildlife corridors, improve biodiversity and protect land.
Arafura Nolans project
KBR supporting Arafura Rare Earths to deliver world class rare earths project in Australia
KBR was appointed as the Project Management Consultant by Arafura Rare Earths for the Nolans Project in late 2019, through which we work in collaboration with our sub-consultant Wave International Engineering as an Integrated Project Management Team (IPMT). The IPMT is project managing the Process Plant and Non-Process Infrastructure for the ~A$1b+ Nolans Project to source critical rare earths minerals in Australia’s Northern Territory.
KBR is also supporting Arafura to plan the operational roll out of the corporate sustainability strategy and a comprehensive suite of sustainability offerings for the project.

- Rare earths are a critical resource and essential part of today’s lifestyle due to our dependence on technology and pursuit of clean energy solutions.
- The Nolans Project is a critical step toward diversifying the production of rare earths minerals beyond China and building stronger and more reliable supply chains within the international arena.
- KBR’s sustainability solutions complement the longstanding support KBR is providing to Arafura Rare Earths and enables the company to achieve its impressive ESG commitments.
Economic and Sustainability Roadmap for South Burnett Regional Council
Providing a long-term plan for the South Burnett region
KBR is working with the South Burnett Regional Council to develop a long-term plan for the region with a 25-year economic and sustainability roadmap.
To deliver this, KBR is assessing the viability of water infrastructure for three agricultural and industrial areas in addition to the demand for new water solutions in the region.
The roadmap will guide the region through the transition from a dependence on the mining and energy industry.
