KBR Newcastle

Historically anchored in coal mining and heavy industry, the Hunter region is on a transformative journey; diversifying its economic base to build a sustainable and prosperous future. Our local, Newcastle based team is here to support this change, drawing on our expertise in infrastructure, defence, energy, water and transport to support the future transformation of the region.

Proud history, bright future

Our history in the region began in 1969, when we provided engineering and technology solutions to Orica’s ammonia plant - which still utilises KBR’s ammonia processing technology to this day. KBR is the world leader in ammonia technology with approximately 50% market share of licensed capacity.

We’ve undertaken project management and engineering investigations for the Fort Scratchley Historic Site Restoration and had an advisory relationship with Hunter Water, particularly associated with some of its regulatory submissions.

We’ve also developed options for passing loops for ARTC Hunter Coal Chain at Werris Creek and undertook routing studies for the Freight Corridor Bypass.

More recently, we played a PMO role for Energy Co on the new Hunter Transmission Project and were recently engaged to conduct an initial scoping study in the Port of Newcastle New Energy Precinct. To help continue to build a bright future for the Hunter region and supporting its transition, KBR will continue to provide consulting, design, delivery and technology solutions.

Defence infrastructure

For decades, KBR has partnered with the Australian Government and Australian Defence Force (ADF) on large-scale programs, successfully delivering enhanced national security capabilities through complex engineering, technical consultancy, program management, nuclear support and technology and infrastructure development. We combine mission expertise with advanced digital technologies to support the ADF with some of their most complex and mission critical needs – from supporting mission operations, the integration of systems to enable real-time, assured decision-making, and partnering to enhance fleet availability. This ongoing partnership underscores KBR's commitment to strengthening Australia's national security and defence readiness.

In the Hunter, we’ve provided engineering and project management services to the Williamtown RAAF Base, supporting its modernisation and expansion. We have also contributed to the development of the F-35A Lightning II maintenance and sustainment hub at Newcastle Airport. KBR's involvement in these projects not only supports the ADF but also brings economic benefits to the local community through job creation and regional development.
