Feasibility and Planning

Conceptualising the possibilities

Navigating the challenges of today’s resources landscape takes more than hard work. It takes the right kind of partner who has the technical and delivery knowledge to ensure every part of the project is optimised, from the design of mine infrastructure, mining methods and processing techniques to mine operations.

Engineering and design

Various types of engineering studies and concept designs are undertaken which vary depending on the nature of the project and the mineral resource being developed. In addition to the mining facility itself, up to 70% of the upfront costs of a large-scale minerals development are spent on infrastructure—civil works, housing, roads, rail lines, energy and water supply, settling ponds, airstrips, conveyors, wharves, harbours, and container terminals.

We draw on a team of over 1000 technical professionals with the industry leading expertise needed to meet the specialised demands of minerals projects with safety, constructability, operability and maintainability front of mind, to ensure we’re always delivering innovation and improved value at the very early stages of the project. We then move concepts through to detailed engineering designs and plans for the mine infrastructure and facilities, including site layouts, equipment specifications, and construction drawings.

Cost estimating

Cost estimating is an essential aspect of any project as it helps organisations make informed decisions about resource allocation, risk management, and project financing. We support organisations to clearly define the scope of a project, develop work breakdown structures and identify resources for each activity along with building in contingency for unexpected events that may impact the project's cost. Analysis is then undertaken to identify the critical cost drivers and assess the impact of changes in the cost of individual resources.

Industry benchmarking

Our customers’ growing need and willingness to look beyond organisational boundaries and further into industry is shifting our focus to building greater capital plan confidence. We support this shift through long term forecasting and comparative industry benchmarking of cost, time and performance.

Benchmarking provides a means to anonymously track performance against industry participants, further enabling prudent investment decision making.

Protecting and enhancing environments and communities

Mining projects are often located in remote and environmentally sensitive areas.

A forward-thinking approach is needed to identify and minimise social, cultural, and environmental impacts through effective management practices and the adoption of sustainable practices that consider threatened species, heritage, surface and groundwater, and consultation with communities to ensure projects leave a lasting legacy.

As experts in guiding projects through environmental assessments, approvals, engagement and certification, our team empowers customers and governments to overcome these issues by creating smart solutions that minimise the impacts, through all phases of project delivery.

Risk management

Risk management plays a vital part in delivering success. We recognise risk as a condition that exists in all projects: fast-tracked timetables, environmental compliance and tight capital budgets all have the potential to disrupt.

We keep risks in view and under control by systematically identifying, assessing, proactively responding to and monitoring risk throughout the entire project life cycle. Proactive management, rather than crisis management, is what we do.

Risk awareness combined with meticulous planning will often create opportunities to add real value, and as a project progresses to execution, we regularly review and challenge perceived risks to keep projects on track.
