Prediction optimisation for weather effects on ratings monitoring & evaluation tool

Powering smarter networks: Frazer-Nash wins $2.1M ElectraNet project

ElectraNet, owner and operator of South Australia’s electricity transmission network, delivers safe, reliable, and sustainable power to homes and businesses. Frazer-Nash partnered with ElectraNet to develop PowerMET, a scalable weather intelligence tool that models hyper-local conditions across 5,600+ km of transmission lines. PowerMET enables dynamic power flow adjustments, improves line rating accuracy, and reduces reliance on field sensors. It outperformed traditional methods, boosting network capacity and laying the foundation for a future digital twin.

Project highlights:

  • Developed for ElectraNet to enhance South Australia’s electricity transmission network.
  • Combines satellite and ground-based weather data with spatial analysis and data science to model ambient conditions.
  • Overlays live and forecast weather across the network, creating a real-time digital weather map.
  • Enables operators to dynamically adjust power flow, improving safety and optimising capacity.
  • Replaces physical sensors, delivering greater accuracy, sustainability, and operational efficiency.

Technology assessment and capability management initiative

Accelerating innovation, empowering defence

The Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) is a government initiative that rapidly transitions disruptive technologies into operational Defence capabilities, with its Capability Transition Branch ensuring mission alignment, acquisition readiness, and collaboration across Defence, industry, and academia.

Frazer-Nash provided strategic advisory, engineering assurance, and program management, designing investment processes, assessing risks, tailoring innovation contracts, and managing lifecycles to accelerate technology readiness and enable rapid capability transition.

Project highlights:

  • Led engineering and assurance framework development for the assessment of technology
  • Delivered strategic technical and commercial risk advice
  • Designed investment processes and evaluation systems for Defence Innovation Hub (DIH)
  • Developed innovation contract templates and execution plans
  • Managed lifecycles, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Conducted global market scans and capability assessments to support sovereign technology decisions and Defence integration planning.

Bowen Water Pipeline

Pipeline to prosperity

A 150-kilometre water pipeline scheme, with the potential to supply 80,000 megalitres of water a year to the Bowen region. Potential to be a secure source of water for a green hydrogen industry.

KBR has developed the detailed business case including demand and supply assessment and economic, financial, and risk analysis.

If built, the project would support up to 205 construction jobs and potentially enable an increase in horticultural production in the region by $300 million per annum.

Project highlights:

  • Aims to enhance water security for communities and businesses
  • Supports agriculture, aquaculture, and future green hydrogen production at Abbot Point.
  • Supports the expansion of existing agricultural operations by enabling irrigation of up to 15,000 hectares of additional land.
  • Final stage of Queensland Government approval, with construction expected within 12 months.
  • Strong community backing, including Traditional Owner equity participation. If built, the project would support up to 205 construction jobs and potentially enable an increase in horticultural production in the region by $300 million per annum.

Metro Tunnel Project – Rail Network Alliance

Integrated system, enabling seamless journeys

The Metro Tunnel is a transformative rail project enhancing access across Melbourne via a new high-capacity rail line. As a member of the Rail Network Alliance, responsible for delivering key infrastructure and systems upgrades including signalling, Frazer-Nash has provided systems engineering and assurance services.

This includes safety and assurance, reliability, availability and maintainability analysis, safety integrity level demonstration, and end-to-end systems engineering and safety assurance delivery, enabling safe, reliable operations and successful commissioning across integrated rail systems.

Project highlights:

  • Developed strategic operational plans for Victoria’s first high-capacity signalling system, embedding Safety in Design and aligning with operator needs.
  • Delivered multi-disciplinary safety assurance, hazard analysis, and team training across complex rail infrastructure.
  • Managed systems integration, including requirements, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability analysis, and Safety Integrity Level demonstration.
  • Mitigated integration risks across Melbourne’s rail network through robust Configuration Management and assurance planning.
  • Provided end-to-end systems engineering with a strong Verification and Validation framework supporting safe, reliable operations.

Nuclear training and upskilling for the Submarine Rotational Force – West Infrastructure Project

Strengthening Australia’s future nuclear workforce

The Submarine Rotational Force – West (SRF-West) is a strategic AUKUS initiative enabling a rotational presence of UK and US nuclear-powered submarines at HMAS Stirling from 2027. It builds Australia’s capability to operate and maintain nuclear-powered submarines, supporting national defence and regional stability while preparing for sovereign SSN (ship submersible nuclear) operations.Delivering and operating the SRF-West project and Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarine capability requires extensive upskilling. Through one of Australia’s largest teams of Nuclear Safety Qualified Engineering Personnel (NSQEP), Frazer-Nash is providing expert advice and technical assurance for nuclear safety systems, ensuring all infrastructure and operations meet rigorous safety, regulatory, and engineering standards essential for Australia’s nuclear submarine capability.

Project highlights:

  • Supporting the establishment of foundational knowledge to help readiness for safe operation, waste management, and long-term stewardship of nuclear assets.
  • Developed a nuclear competency and training framework to provide structured training and upskilling to project stakeholders
  • NSQEPs provide technical assurance, ensuring compliance with international nuclear safety and engineering standards.
  • Workforce development spans nuclear experts, engineers, technicians, and tradespeople with radiological safety training.
  • Key nuclear infrastructure includes radiological maintenance facilities, waste systems, and a Nuclear Safety Management System.

Arafura Nolans Project

KBR supporting Arafura Rare Earths to deliver world class rare earths project in Australia

KBR was appointed as the Project Management Consultant by Arafura Rare Earths for the Nolans Project in late 2019, through which we work in collaboration with our sub-consultant Wave International Engineering as an Integrated Project Management Team (IPMT). The IPMT is project managing the Process Plant and Non-Process Infrastructure for the ~A$1b+ Nolans Project to source critical rare earths minerals in Australia’s Northern Territory.

KBR is also supporting Arafura to plan the operational roll out of the corporate sustainability strategy and a comprehensive suite of sustainability offerings for the project.

Alongside this, Frazer-Nash will be developing the Safety Case to ensure safe and compliant operation of the processing plant that due to its complexity and requirement for volatile liquids is classed as a “Major Hazard Facility”

Project highlights:

  • Rare earths are a critical resource and essential part of today’s lifestyle due to our dependence on technology and pursuit of clean energy solutions.
  • The Nolans Project is a critical step toward diversifying the production of rare earths minerals beyond China and building stronger and more reliable supply chains within the international arena.
  • KBR’s sustainability solutions complement the longstanding support KBR is providing to Arafura Rare Earths and enables the company to achieve its impressive ESG commitments.
