Hydrogen & ammonia

A clean energy future

Hydrogen and ammonia present an incredible opportunity to transition to cleaner, more reliable energy – particularly for economies without adequate access to renewable energies. As energy vectors, hydrogen and ammonia enable the storage and transportation of Australia’s rapidly expanding renewable energy market, providing an incredible economic opportunity for energy exports.

The establishment of a productive, economically viable, and large-scale clean hydrogen industry is crucial for achieving Australia’s domestic decarbonisation goals and ensuring that energy trade continues to be a fundamental component of our future economy. With extensive experience in both hydrogen and ammonia projects, in Australia and around the world, we are well placed to help governments and businesses take advantage of these emerging energy alternatives.

KBR is the world leader in ammonia technology with approximately 50% market share of licensed capacity. Since 1943, KBR has licensed, engineered, or constructed over 250 grassroot ammonia plants worldwide. From electrolysis of water and air separation to ammonia synthesis, KBR’s process offers an end-to-end power to ammonia performance guarantee.

From blue to green

While green hydrogen is the preferred option, there are significant economic, technological, infrastructure and logistical barriers to scaling up an export-scale green hydrogen industry in Australia. Drawing on our domain expertise, we offer ‘Blue2Green’ pathways to a future export‐scale green hydrogen industry that can help progress Australia’s energy transition. A Blue2Green approach focuses on developing green hydrogen, while recognising the role of blue energy during the transitional phase.

We work with customers across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to end-use applications, providing cutting-edge technologies for hydrogen production, including steam methane reforming, autothermal reforming, and electrolysis. We also help plan, design, and deliver hydrogen infrastructure, such as storage facilities, pipelines, and refuelling stations to enable the seamless integration of hydrogen into the grid.

Green ammonia

As a fuel, Australia’s existing diesel‐powered rucking, shipping and rail industry can be run on ammonia immediately, eliminating a carbon footprint while leveraging Australia’s existing logistics system to run on and transport ‘green fuel’ nationwide.

KBR is a world leader in ammonia technology having licensed over 250 grassroots ammonia plants since 1944. K-GreeN® is KBR's best-in-class, integrated solution for high efficiency synthesis of CO2-free ammonia to achieve lowest levelised cost.
