Next-Generation High-Energy Laser (HEL) Capabilities
The U.S. military is constantly facing evolving threats around the world from low-cost yet capable, small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Our defense forces need a sophisticated way to identify, classify and destroy any threat with hostile intent. KORD can provide you with state-of-the-art solutions.
Solutions
KORD possesses a unique, industry-leading collection of directed energy subject matter experts with extensive backgrounds in electro-optics, software engineering, artificial intelligence/machine learning, predictive avoidance, systems engineering and integration.
KORD’s Directed Energy Team has been built and has led the U.S. Army’s effort to develop its first fieldable high-energy laser (HEL) weapon system. The effort will ultimately result in the fielding of the Directed Energy Maneuver - Short Range Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) system designed to defeat UAS, rotary and fixed-wing; rockets, artillery, and mortars (RAM). In addition to the development and integration of directed energy systems, KORD’s extensive training experience is unparalleled. This capability is highlighted by the fact that KORD-directed energy systems own a long list of “firsts”.
Performance
KORD’s Directed Energy Team is consistently FIRST:
- First Army soldier-operated HEL to shoot down a drone flying above and below horizon.
- First Army soldier-operated HEL to participate in a joint warfighter assessment.
- First HEL weapon to demonstrate dual operator, dual tracking fusion for integrated aim-point adjustment and target hand-off.
The FIREFLYTM is based on KORD’s scalable high-energy laser architecture and is available in 10kW or 20kW options. The fully self-contained laser system includes power supply, thermal management, high-capacity batteries, and integrated radar and electronic warfare subsystems with significantly reduced size, weight, power, and cost affordability.
Areas of Expertise
Hostile events witnessed throughout the world display real-world threats around practically every corner. With the proliferation of low cost, yet capable small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) throughout the world, the U.S. government and military need a sophisticated way to identify, classify, and destroy any threat with hostile intent.
Continued technological advancements in directed energy systems offer new and promising innovations that will keep the U.S. ahead of the power curve on the modern battlefield, whether against near-peer nations or non-state actors. Directed energy systems provide the warfighter with the ability to engage a target at the speed of light and produce scalable effects from temporary to permanent, thereby reducing the possibility of collateral damage. They also provide a relatively unlimited number of low-cost shots, constrained only by the fuel supply of the platform, which greatly reduce the logistics tail and associated cost.
Kord Advantage
Kord has committed significant Independent Research and Development (IRAD) investments to build a state-of-the-art Directed Energy Center of Excellence that provides enhanced directed energy system design, fabrication, assembly and indoor test capabilities. The facility includes a state-of-the-art, 3,000- square-foot Directed Energy Lab and cleanroom that supports a wide range of development and testing operations. In addition to the lab, the facility provides 11,000 square feet of high bay space that includes a 10-ton double girder overhead crane capability. The high bay is also equipped with advanced electrical support systems throughout, indoor high energy laser test and verification ranges, an industrial exhaust removal system, and a full complement of other assembly-support equipment.
FIREFLYTM
KORD's HEL solution: A next-generation, self-contained, palletized high-energy laser system that maximizes performance, reliability, maintainability and transportability. KORD’s FIREFLYTM high-energy laser (HEL) weapon system, a self-contained directed energy solution, offers the latest in directed energy protection, no matter where defense is needed.
Why KORD?
KORD possesses a unique, industry-leading collection of directed energy subject matter experts with extensive backgrounds in electro-optics, software engineering, artificial intelligence/machine learning, predictive avoidance, battle management software, fire control, target acquisition and tracking, advanced training solutions, systems engineering and integration. KORD’s directed energy team has been built and honed during the past seven years, leading the U.S. Army’s effort to develop its first fieldable HEL weapon system. The effort will ultimately result in the fielding of the DE M-SHORAD system designed to defeat UAS; rotary and fixed-wing aircraft; and RAM. In addition to developing and integrating directed energy systems, KORD’s extensive training experience is unparalleled.
