What is military leave?
Military leave allows eligible employees to fulfill their military service commitments without jeopardizing their employment. It is primarily governed by the regions where the company operates.
How do I apply for military leave?
Employees are generally expected to inform the employer before taking any type of military leave. Whether leave is one (1) week, or one (1) year, employees must provide as much advance notice as possible.
Maintain Communication:
Maintain an open line of communication with the employee before, during and after their leave. This helps in understanding their needs and ensuring a smooth transition back to work. Plan for employee’s potential absence and redistribute workload as needed.
Create a handover plan
Provide contact information for the colleague or team member who will handle your tasks in your absence. Provide necessary information including access to relevant documents and systems.
What type of support is provided during military leave.
KBR offers various forms of support to ensure service members and their families are well taken care of. This support is crucial for the well-being and effectiveness of employees who serve in the Armed Forces.
- Military Pay – Pay differential is provide for the first 30 days of leave to offset any loss of income.
- Family Support – Counseling and support service programs are available to both the employee and their family.
- Health Benefits – Health benefits continue or, as a qualifying event, employees who encounter longer term military leave have an opportunity to make changes to their benefit elections in accordance with the prevailing Plan provisions. If coverage is continued, deductions will typically be taken from any pay received, including PTO usage.
Can Paid Time Off (PTO) be used during my time out?
Employees may utilize Paid Time Off (PTO) during their absence when they do not receive pay otherwise. This is not an opportunity for receipt of PTO above an employee’s regular pay.
Can a combination of military leave, work hours and PTO be used while I am on deployment?
The answer is yes, as long as the manager and customer approves the work can be done especially if the work is abroad. It is recommended to maintain a copy of the approval (email is acceptable) incase of a future audit. PTO cannot be charged above and beyond existing assigned work hours. The Leave Earnings Statement must be provided to process differential pay.
Do I receive differential pay if I am not paid by the military due to a prior disability?
No. A Leave Earnings Statement (LES) is required to process leave differential pay. Reach out to your People Team point of contact for further questions.
Do I continue to accrue PTO while out on Military Leave?
Yes. PTO accrual continues for up to 180 days.
How do I complete military leave time while I am out?
Military leave is credited on the basis of an 8-hour workday. Staying current with completing time while on military leave is important to ensure accuracy of tracking time and potential compensation. Here are a few steps to help effectively stay up to date.
- Understand the policy: Before going on leave, review the timekeeping policy with your People Team point of contact.. This will help to comprehend requirements and any specific systems that must be used.
- Document Leave Dates: Keep a record of military leave dates, including the start and end dates, and any intermittent leave days. This is necessary for accurate timecard completion.
- Use the correct codes: KBR uses specific codes or categories for military leave. Make sure these are used accurately on the timecard and ensure time is tracked correctly.
- Keep records of military orders: This can be helpful if there are any questions or discrepancies regarding timekeeping.
- Submit timecards in advance if possible. Your People Partner point of contact or Payroll can provide assistance as needed to complete your time.
Reemployment Rights:
Reemployment rights are essential protections provided to service members to ensure they can return to work after completing military service. This is governed by the regions where KBR operates as a business.
Understand Legal Obligations:
Familiarize yourself with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and any regions where KBR operates as a business. These laws protect the job rights of individuals who voluntarily or involuntarily leave employment positions to undertake military service.
Respect and Consideration:
Show respect for the employee’s service and consider their unique needs and challenges. Be flexible and understanding during their transition back to work
